We’ve told you about The Green Lama, and Marvel Comic’s recent re-telling of Spider-Man’s origin story with a young Zen monk as Peter Parker’s stand-in. And of course everyone knows about Lisa Simpson, the most famous cartoon Buddhist of them all.
There have of course been some bad seeds, like Lady Lotus, who used meditation to further her anti-American aims. But did you know that the second Green Lantern was raised in a Zen monastery and identifies as a practitioner, and that the X-Men’s Wolverine has participated in Buddhist ceremonies? The pantheon of Buddhist superheroes and supervillians is bigger than you might think.
Joining the fold now is none other than the Buddha himself. Well, sort of. As reader Roman G. writes:
“DHARMA-BURGER! If Deepak Chopra’s fictionalized account of the life of the Buddha wasn’t dubious enough, said account is now being adapted into comic book form by Virgin Comics.”
You can see what Roman’s talking about here.

And here is an interesting little piece about an exhibition by Sylvain Bouthillette, a Buddhist artist whose work “can be described as coming from the ‘bad painting’ school of art, which is related to the skateboarding, punk rocking, rebellious graffiti counter-culture of the 1980s.”
