“…I like the sign in the background. (’Ride the beast.’)”

It really isn’t. This link goes to a pdf what looks like a cool article about the origins of Buddha imagery. Kinda neat. It is, in fact, also a semi-promotional piece for an Indian Art business. I think it might be okay. Dunno. And I can’t yet vouch for the article but it looks pretty good at a glance. So check it out if you want to decide for yourself. Here’s a regular, non-pdf html version.

A Bodhisattva in NYC
March 29, 2008 · No Comments
Thanks to reader JB for sending a real-life example of what he described as “wonderfully excellent bodhisattva activity”:
A Victim Treats His Mugger Right (via NPR)
As JB also wrote, “I think there’s a koan about this, too.” And he sent it along to share with you:
Zen Master Ryokan lived the simplest kind of life in a little hut at the foot of a mountain. One evening a thief visited the hut only to discover there was nothing to steal.
Ryokan returned and caught him. “You have come a long way to visit me,” he told the prowler, “and you should not return empty-handed. Please take my clothes as a gift.”
The thief was bewildered. He took the clothes and slunk away.
Ryoken sat naked, watching the moon. “Poor fellow,” he mused, “I wish I could have given him this beautiful moon.”

Link of the Moment: Newsweek’s exclusive interview with the Dalai Lama

Right here.
A great quote from it: “Every night in my Buddhist practice I give and take. I take in Chinese suspicion. I give back trust and compassion. I take their negative feeling and give them positive feeling. I do that every day.”

If the Worst Horse was a Buddhist version of Cute Overload, Conan surely would the first entry. Click here to see him. And also here.
And thanks to reader Kevin O for sending this link to shots of a Buddha statue made of pills. Unfortunately, we can’t parse the text, but the images and idea are cool.
