TIBET IS IMPORTANT. …So keep up to date with these links!

Well, here we go again. After decades of Chinese oppression of Tibet, after Burma’s incredibly moving (but, likely, ultimately failed) “Saffron Revolution,” the world’s eyes are fixing now upon a moment that seems, eerily, to blend the two. The headline on CNN.com right now? “Tibet in turmoil as riots grip capital.” The homepage text-link to that article reads, simply, “Fed-up Tibetans setting fires in capital,” while the Dalai Lama is calling for “calm dialogue.”

Let’s not let this one fail, Horses. At the very least, keep up with it.

When the Saffron Revolution went down, The Worst Horse started a “Burma is important” update page. We won’t be doing that this time, simply ’cause this blog can replace that. (It’s CERTAINLY not that Tibet is any less “important.”) So stay tuned here for updates.

But there are plenty of other places to find coverage. Here are some of them:

1) Philip Ryan’s postings on the Tricycle Editor’s blog. Not to put too much pressure on ol’ Phil, but it’s all but guaranteed that he will cover this stuff better than anyone else, in terms of short, smart writings, and pointing us all to important breaking news and links.

2) The NY Times Asia/Pacific page.

3) The Economist’s Asia page.

4) Students for a Free Tibet. Their homepage is constantly updated. And their links page is great, too.

5) Precious Metal. Nate tracks the news, sorting the wheat from the chaff and throwing just enough of his own humanity and personality into the mix.

Please, visit these sites. Bookmark them. Or at least bookmark this post and refer to it. Lastly, be sure to see the Times’ photos from today.

Free Tibet!
Free Burma!
Free all beings!

  • Hi! I’ve put an “idiot’s guide to Tibet”, news links about the protests and violence, and CONTACT INFO FOR ALL CHINESE EMBASSIES AND CONSULATES IN U.S. at this site. Pray/sit/chant!

  • what a shame that there’s nothing about it on tv.

  • Yea right… when Tibetans do it, it’s b/c it’s their right… when Iraqis do it it’s b/c they are terrorists… get it straight ppl, these Tibetans are rioting, not protesting, and as far as I can tell, Chinese military didn’t use any force whatsoever, yet the news made it sound like they are the ones rioting…

For those rooting for “Free Tibet”, why don’t you chant “Free Texas”, “Free Guam”, hell… “Free the Native Indians!”

  • TC:
Sorry to be so blunt, but are you blind?
I see that your last post was almost a month ago so you must have seen the ridiculousness of your words. The Chinese are obviously using force and there is credible evidence that Chinese soldiers wearing monks’ robes may have actually incited some of the violence — the British intelligence services found this out.
The point that most people seem to forget is not that the Tibetan people are held in such high regard, without a doubt many other groups have been treated as poorly. The point is that the Chinese government sees them as their property, not as individuals and are simply trying to destroy them, using whatever means — usually violence — that they deem right.
I apologize, TC, but I think you’re just another misinformed Chinese-government supporter.
I would hope that you can become more enlightened to the reality of our world.
    namaste.
    Chris

  • Well said, Chris.
